Iran's nuclear plans draw sharp response from US

Obama's Problems -- and Ours by Patrick J. Buchanan
pressure on the president is mounting for "crippling" sanctions on Iran that could lead to a third U.S. war against a nation with a population larger than Afghanistan and Iraq combined.

Behind Clinton's tough talk on Iran
The goal of Hillary Clinton's rhetoric seems to be to promote conflict and convince Americans Iran is a threat to their security....The public relations campaign is working. A new Gallup poll finds that 61% of Americans see Iran as "as a critical threat to US vital interests," with an additional 29% believing that it is "an important threat". Red alert, folks. You are being prepared for another war based on false pretenses and by the same crowd.

Liquidating the Empire by Patrick J. Buchanan
Even if it is the economy that will inevitably bring about the undoing of American empire it is hard to ignore the fact that the economic crisis was fueled by spending on wars and homeland security using borrowed money and pushing the government deep into deficit spending.

Clinton avoided nuke question - student
If the Americans "so vehemently oppose Iran's nuclear programme,'' she had asked, "then why isn't the US asking Israel to give up their nuclear weapons?'' Ms Clinton gave a lengthy answer detailing the US case against Iran, but did not mention Israel.

Barak heads to U.S. to discuss Iran, Mideast peace talks
Barak will devote much of his visit to the Iranian threat and its implications for Israel's relations with its closest neighbors.

US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation How Much Military Aid to Israel
The budget deficit in New York State is roughly equal to the amount that New York State taxpayers are paying in aid to Israel. While more Americans go jobless, homeless, and as Paterson is poised to close many state parks in New York State, we are instead giving the hard-earned taxpayer's dollars to a nation that repeatedly commits war crimes, that is stealing and occupying the land of another people, and whose economy is evidently not in the grave state as is the case with ours.

Rep. Ron Paul surprise winner of CPAC presidential straw poll
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney finished second with 22 percent of the vote, ending a three-year winning streak at CPAC. Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin finished third with 7 percent of the vote, followed by Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty at 6 percent and Indiana Rep. Mike Pence at 5 percent.

A major US Muslim group has decried officials' "double standard" in refusing to label Texas suicide plane crash as an act of terrorism. If a Muslim or Arab had done the same act, we all know it would have been called terrorism.

New Grist for Hype on Iran by Ray McGovern
Press reports over the past few days – as well as past experience – strongly suggest that the “new evidence” cited by the Times may have comes from the usual suspects – agenda-laden sources, like Israeli intelligence.

Syria's Assad holds security talks with U.S. official

U.S. Delays Iran Sanctions While Persuading Israel Not To Attack
“The main issue is coordination and exchange of views on Iran,” an Israeli diplomat briefed on the talks said. “It is mainly about sharing estimates and intelligence.” But another official, based in Israel, said it is clear that both countries have also used these talks to shore up unwritten understandings regarding the way forward on Iran......"as the nuclear issue escalates, dealing with Israel could become as big a challenge for the United States as dealing with Iran.” Because Israel is more willing than the United States to use military force, “an eventual U.S.-Israeli crisis is likely,” the analysts wrote.

Same Old, Same Old by Philip Giraldi
Even if it is the economy that will inevitably bring about the undoing of American empire it is hard to ignore the fact that the economic crisis was fueled by spending on wars and homeland security using borrowed money and pushing the government deep into deficit spending.

UN nuke agency worried Iran may be working on arms
Thursday's 10–page IAEA report did not go into specifics, and it many of the alleged activities listed had appeared in previous reports. But a senior international official familiar with the IAEA probe of Iran said the agency continued to receive new intelligence from agency member nations on activities allegedly linked to attempts to build nuclear arms. And which 'agency member nations' would those be?

US conservatives prefer Paul to Palin: poll
A straw poll of US conservative activists saw Texas congressman Ron Paul emerge as the preferred Republican presidential candidate to run against President Barack Obama in 2012. Even the CPACers dislike those out for their own interests and/or special interests as opposed to those like Paul who don't pander to any corporate or foreign interests.

US State Department lifts travel warning for Syria
The U.S. has lifted an advisory warning American travelers of security concerns in Syria, officials said, as Washington tries to boost ties with a country seen as key to peace in the region.

The Chalabi Factor in Iraq
If the neocons want to blame someone for the loss of Iraq, they ought to look in the mirror.

The rapid pace of the escalation - almost daily reports of missile shield expansion in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, the Persian Gulf and Turkey; heightened and progressively more bellicose words and actions directed against Iran - is occurring at a breakneck and almost dizzying speed, drawing in larger and larger tracts of Europe and Asia.

West turns diplomatic screw – but Israel refuses to crack
The international fallout into Mabhouh's death showed no sign of abating. In Paris, the French government also summoned an Israeli diplomat, and Germany – often seen as one of the West European countries most sympathetic to Israel – called on Israel to "provide any information it had which might help explain the circumstances" of the Hamas militant's death.

Russia warns West against crippling Iran sanctions

Israel unveils new drone fleet that can reach Iran
Israel and the U.S. believe Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons; Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes. Notice how the Associated Press continues to say that the US believes Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons when our NIE assessment still does not bear this out. Read the related article by Giraldi in this news batch.

Nearly 20 percent of U.S. workers underemployed
In findings that appear to paint a darker employment picture than official U.S. data, Gallup estimated that about 30 million Americans are underemployed, meaning either jobless or able to find only part–time work. Again, America can ill afford another war (this time- with Iran).

Some Straight Thinking About Iran by Philip Giraldi
the Annual Threat Assessment and the possibly forthcoming NIE would really only confirm the 2007 NIE’s judgment that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon, does not appear to have an in-place weapons program, and is still several years away from having a nuclear device even if the political decision is made to proceed.......Why is Iran the target of so much rage even though it has not threatened the United States or any vital American interest? Influence over Congress and the media from Israel and its friends is surely a large part of the answer. America beware.

The New Poor
Even as the American economy shows tentative signs of a rebound, the human toll of the recession continues to mount, with millions of Americans remaining out of work, out of savings and nearing the end of their unemployment benefits. The United States can ill afford a new war in the Middle East.

Attack Iran?
Applebaum, not exactly an Iran expert, used her ink in the Post today to warn that President Obama had better start preparing for an Israeli strike on Iran. In fact, that was the title of her op–ed: "Prepare for war with Iran." In it, she suggests that "at some point" Israel's restraint vis–avis Iran could evaporate, partly because President Ahmadinejad "makes(s) the Israelis paranoid." An Israeli strike, she says, "would be followed by retaliation, some of which would be directed at us, our troops in Iraq, our ships at sea." Worth a read, from a few years back: "Four Day War"

'An attack on Israel would be considered an attack on Canada'
Junior Foreign Affairs minister Peter Kent is suggesting Canada stands ready to throw its full military weight behind Israel, telling a Toronto publication that “an attack on Israel would be considered an attack on Canada.” Canada has become another Israeli occupied territory thanks to the efforts of its influential Israeli lobby. They will likely at some point face the 'blowback' that my country has as a consequence of this support of Israel.

‘S-300 delivery a serious development’
Should Teheran acquire the system, a potential military strike on Iranian nuclear sites could become far more difficult, but it remains far from clear when and if Moscow intends to transfer the military hardware to Iran.

War game shows how attacking Iran could backfire
Here's a war game involving Iran, Israel and the U.S. that shows how unintended consequences can spin out of control:

Prepare for war with Iran -- in case Israel strikes
In a nutshell: we have to prepare for a war on Iran in case Israel strikes. Because if she does, then we will automatically be dragged along.

The alleged Iranian threat
Another war conceived in Israel

Ron Paul’s Victory: How Sweet It Is!
Fox News simply repeated the word "unscientific" whenever it mentioned the CPAC poll results, as its "news" reporters wondered aloud if indeed Paul’s runaway victory had any meaning at all. Most of the attendees were young activists, Fox anchors endlessly reminded their viewers – and oh those wacky kids!

US Supreme Court Considers 'Material Support' Law
"The government cannot, consistent with the Constitution, make it a crime to engage in lawful discussion of peaceable activities,"

The End of Obama’s Vision of a Nuke-Free World by Scott Ritter

We can't win anyway by Michael Scheuer
The military option should be taken off the table in all instances -- save an immediate response to foreign attack -- until we elect a president and congress that will abide by the constitutional requirements and machinery for declaring war that were put in place by the Founders
