US spies give shock verdict on Iran threat** US intelligence agencies undercut the White House today by disclosing for the first time that Iran has not been pursuing a nuclear weapons development programme for the last four years. The disclosure makes it harder for President George Bush and the vice-president, Dick Cheney, to make a case for a military strike against Iran next year. I know that there was some kind of wrangling over this NIE report. It was reported on not too long ago. There was some kind of rebellion in the intel community along the same lines as what happened in the runup to the Iraq war (where Cheney regularly pressured this community to come up with anything on Iraq). In light of that, it is safe to say that we've got some good guys on the case who stood their ground, and frankly, I couldn't be prouder. It's heartening.
Bombs away? ** First of all you have to note, from the public side, that very few Americans actually function as citizens anymore. What I mean by that are people who invest themselves in this country, people who care, who give a damn. Americans are primarily consumers today, and so long as they continue to wrap themselves in the cocoon of comfort, and the system keeps them walking down a road to the perceived path of prosperity, they don't want to rock the boat. If it doesn't have a direct impact on their day-to-day existence, they simply don't care.......The danger of going after Iran is that it is just not worth it. What we can lose is everything, and what we gain is nothing. So why do it? Apathy on the part of the American people is half the battle, as Ritter notes here, and I have mentioned in the past as well. Lobbies exploit the void left by an American populace which has largely turned a blind eye to the political status quo.
